New Orleans Area Property Division Attorneys
Experienced Family Law and Property Division Advocates
One aspect of a divorce that is often the source of many arguments is property division. Most couples have a difficult time deciding how property should be split on their own. With the help of an experienced community property division lawyer, the process can be simplified and a resolution can be reached as quickly as possible. It is important to note that Louisiana is a community property state, which can result in further arguments over what is actually considered marital property and is subject to division.
At the Metairie office of Salley & Salley, Attorneys at Law, our firm is lead by the mother-daughter family law team of Sandra Salley and Laurel Salley. Both Board Certified Family Law Specialists certified by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization, they and our other lawyers have more than 35 years of combined experience. Our entire firm is committed to providing comprehensive divorce and community property division representation to clients in New Orleans, Metairie, and throughout the surrounding Louisiana communities.

What is considered community property?
Louisiana is a community property state. In general, everything that is acquired by the couple during the marriage is considered community property, however, there are always exceptions to the rules. The duration of the marriage is considered to be from the date the marriage was performed to the date that the petition for divorce is filed.
Community debt division
Just like the property and assets of the marriage, debt that is accumulated during the marriage is divided 50-50. This leaves both sides responsible for the debt, instead of placing the burden on just one party.
